England, Spain kick off final of record-breaking Women’s World Cup
The Women’s World Cup final was kicked off on Sunday between England and Spain, finishing up a tournament that set records for viewers and attendance and fueled expectations for a boom in interest in women’s soccer.
The ninth iteration of the world’s premier event, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, was the first to take place in the southern hemisphere and has already set attendance records.
Local interest may have decreased when Australia lost in the semi-finals, but as Sunday’s final began off at 8 p.m. (1000 GMT), about 2 million spectators will have entered the venues in the nine host cities.
The semi-final loss by Australia to England on Wednesday attracted an average of 7.13 million people on the Seven Network stations, the greatest viewership ever noted by research company OzTAM since its founding in 2001.
Matches for the Matildas sold out months in advance, and organizers anticipate that once all 64 games are over, the average attendance will surpass 30,000.
More over 1.1 million spectators attended 52 games during the last Women’s World Cup in France four years ago, with a total attendance of 21,756.

Zhang Weili defeated Amanda Lemos in the co-main event by unanimous decision after dominating in her maiden title defense. Lemos was outscored by Zhang 163 to 24 in decisive blows. Her big strike differential of +139 ranks second in a women’s UFC fight.

Inter Miami defeated Nashville FC in penalties on Saturday, and Lionel Messi scored the winning goal, giving the team its first trophy and the Leagues Cup victory.

Fafa Picault’s header from a corner kick in the 57th minute of the second half, which rebounded off Inter Miami’s Benjamin Cremaschi and Drake Callender before falling to Nashville, tied the game.
The game entered penalties tied at 1-1 after numerous close calls from both teams.
As the shootout transitioned into sudden death, Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba all converted their penalties for Inter Miami. When both goalkeepers had a chance to win the game, Inter Miami prevailed 10-9 thanks to Callender’s stop of Nashville goalie Elliot Panicco’s shot.
Despite finishing last in the MLS standings, Inter Miami has made significant strides since signing 2022 World Cup champion Messi in June.
