Super-sub Nunez wins 2-1 for 10-man Liverpool against Newcastle.
Newcastle, England, Aug. 27 (Reuters) On Sunday, Liverpool beat Newcastle United 2-1 in the Premier League after captain Virgil van Dijk was sent off in the first half. Darwin Nunez scored twice off the bench.
The Uruguayan came on in the 77th minute and scored two stunning goals, his first Premier League goals since April’s Leeds United strike.
The 24-year-old, who had slid down Liverpool’s offensive pecking order, eclipsed Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, who appeared ready to break his club’s 13-game league record without a victory against Juergen Klopp’s side.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was fortunate to remain on after pulling down Gordon, but he miscontrolled the ball in the 25th minute, enabling Gordon to go on and score past Alisson Becker.
Just over two minutes later, referee John Brooks sent Van Dijk out for fouling Alexander Isak on the edge of the box. The VAR upheld the call.
Alisson saved Miguel Almiron’s thunderous volley on the crossbar in the 36th minute to start the home side’s domination.
Newcastle took advantage of having an additional player by sending Almiron over the bar five minutes into the second half and hitting the post in the 76th.
Nunez changed the game when Sven Botman fumbled his lines and he rifled the ball across Nick Pope and in at the far post to equalise.
Nunez scored again three minutes into stoppage time with an almost identical second to leave the home crowd devastated as Klopp’s team celebrated on the field.
Nunez beams, “I feel very happy for the team to be able to help them,” Sky Sports keeper Alisson translates.
The squad performed admirably after being down a man. We train hard for these times, and I’m pleased to score two goals to assist the squad “said.

F1: 2023 Dutch Grand Prix Post-Race Press Conference Transcript
On Sunday, Max Verstappen won a rain-soaked Dutch Grand Prix to tie Sebastian Vettel’s nine-straight wins and extend his championship lead to 138 points as he pursues a third consecutive global title.
Fernando Alonso of Spain finished second and received a bonus point for the best lap in Zandvoort, where the Red Bull driver won his third consecutive race from pole position.
I never considered nine in a row. Very satisfied “Verstappen. “I know my car is capable.”
That orange-clad home fans cheered him up.
“I had goose bumps when they played the national anthem before the game. Fans played despite terrible weather and rain, creating a great atmosphere “Dutch driver. “I’ll like this. It’s hard and pressured to perform.”
Pierre Gasly finished fourth behind Sergio Perez, but he moved up to third when Perez was penalised five seconds for pit lane speeding.
Gasly’s fourth career podium came after the same penalty.
“I’m feeling so stoked, what a race,” said him.
Perez finished fourth out of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in sixth.
A late red flag when Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu crashed halted the frantic race for 40 minutes. A race featuring many tyre swaps due to weather conditions resumed with a rolling start on Lap 65 of 72.
Verstappen remarked, “There were so many rivers on the track it just becomes so dangerous.”
Verstappen held off Alonso, Perez, and Gasly at the restart. Verstappen easily won his 11th race of a strong season after two circuits behind the safety car to extend his advantage over Perez.
Vettel won four straight championships with Red Bull in 2013, and Verstappen’s triumph was Red Bull’s 14th straight since last year’s final race.
“To match Sebastian, nine straight victories, to do it twice as a team is really incredible,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who directed Vettel during his golden age.
Verstappen got closer to his F1 record of 15 victories from last year to 46 overall. Verstappen, 26, is sixth in victories. He has nine races to catch Alain Prost (51) and Vettel (53)
Charles Leclerc retired on Lap 44 due to floor damage, another poor day for Ferrari. Sainz still has no podiums, while Leclerc had his third DNF of the season, matching last year’s total.
Alonso, 42, is regaining form and optimistic of winning his 33rd professional match.
He said, “We’re getting closer.” ‘The vehicle was flying, competitive, and simple to drive. You need a reliable automobile in these circumstances, and I did today.”
Lando Norris came eighth, followed by Alex Albon (Williams), Oscar Piastri (McLaren), and Esteban Ocon (Alpine). Starting third, Mercedes driver George Russell finished 17th in a forgettable race.
The start saw Verstappen pass Norris and Alonso pass Russell to grab third. Soon after, heavy rain forced many drivers to stop for the first of numerous tyre changes.
Ferrari seemingly forgot to give Leclerc the replacement ones and didn’t detect he had a damaged front wing, again another error from Ferrari this season and last.
Perez changed a lap before Verstappen, who began 10 seconds behind but quickly closed the deficit. With the track drying, Verstappen changed again while Ferrari replaced Leclerc’s front wing. Perez then entered the next lap three seconds behind Verstappen, the new leader.
The safety car was called on Lap 17 of 72 of the high-banking circuit when Logan Sargeant crashed for the second time in two days from 10th position, the highest placement on the grid for an American driver since 1993.
An irritated Sargeant informed his crew, “I don’t know what happened, man”.
Sargeant stood on a grass bank with his head down, battling to save his place after a pointless rookie season.
Alonso was third after the safety car restart, while Verstappen easily beat Perez. Perez drifted behind Verstappen as Leclerc returned to the garage.
He hopes to improve next weekend at Ferrari’s home circuit Monza, where Verstappen can create an F1 record if wins.
It would be fitting as Vettel won his first race there in 2008.

Rodri’s late goal puts Man City in top.
Aug. 27 (Reuters)—Sheffield, England Rodri’s 88th-minute goal gave Manchester City their third win of the season and lifted them to the top of the Premier League.
With time running down, Phil Foden had little control of the ball in the United area, but Rodri stepped in to blast a half-volley into the top corner.
Due to back surgery, Pep Guardiola missed the Bramall Lane game.
Juanma Lillo replaced Guardiola and they won despite seven minutes extra on as the home side sought an equaliser.
Only Champions City have started the season perfectly, with nine points, two ahead of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal.
“We played well today. Much closer to what we intended than the score line showed “Lillo.
After a handball penalty, City attacker Erling Haaland missed the post in the first half.
The Norwegian scored again after the hour with a close-range header from Jack Grealish’s cross.
Had it been in, the penalty may have altered everything. We witnessed a solid, goal-oriented squad “Lillo said.
“In the second half, we picked up the ball faster and improved our rhythm. Using the additional gaps generated by gaining the ball back faster… We should have scored more before the first.”
In the 85th minute, Jayden Bogle beat City keeper Ederson with an angled shot through the crowd after Kyle Walker’s backheel clearance went wrong.
As United seemed to have taken their first point in the top league, Rodri scored the winner, a goal Walker manufactured against his previous team.
United, 17th in the rankings with no points after three games, were cheered off the ground for their effort against last season’s triple champions.
I’d rather make a point than get praise. Play the ideal game to defeat City “Heckingbottom smiled wryly.
City had a lot of the ball, but we felt like we controlled where it was. It merely salts wounds.”

4.Simone Biles – Search Volume 100K+
US gymnastics’ new ‘normal’ is Simone Biles.
Santa Clara — Gymnast Simone Biles competing last on floor is the equivalent of a walk-off homer.
Biles won her sixth U.S. national all-around gold Sunday with her best performance since returning to competitive gymnastics at U.S. Classic three weeks earlier. Laurent Landi, her instructor, commented, “That was the best floor routine I’ve ever seen her do.” Biles’s sixth national floor championship routine ended with a standing ovation that rocked the SAP Centre. The 11,000 spectators seemed to have saved two years of ovation for the four-time Olympic gold champion.
“Every time I come out here, I feel like a fever dream,” Biles said after the event. “I feel unreal. Though I believed I executed a terrific floor routine, seeing the score afterward made me think, ‘Damn, I need to watch that routine.’ Because I doubted. In the now. But it doesn’t feel genuine. I can’t believe I’m competing again. So pleased of myself.”
After day one and every rotation Sunday, Biles led the two-day competition, but the floor performance will remain with U.S. gymnastics fans. They mostly watch Biles. The homemade “Simone Zone” and “Biles is Back” placards they fly after her acts are evidence.
One fan from Denver held a placard that said, “We travelled 1,685 miles for Biles!” to meet his father from Seattle. Fans like them see every floor routine, Yurchenko double pike vault, and beam set as additional time with the 26-year-old, who took two years off after the Tokyo Olympics and returned earlier this month with her future unknown.
Biles stated she is prepared differently for the Olympics this time. She hasn’t stated her own aspirations, including making the Paris team. She first spoke to the media in San Jose following Sunday’s tournament. The weekend camera team did not follow her as they did before Tokyo. Sunday, she performed just the Cheng vault to preserve her ankles, which were painful after landing the Yurchenko double pike Friday and wrapped throughout her vault and floor routine Sunday. She was out of the vault championship race, but Landi stated they did it for her safety and ankle healing.
Again, Biles’ actions were louder than her words.
The nation’s top gymnasts and coaches, including Biles and Landi, have talked about hitting “eight for eight” or doing “normal” gymnastics over the two days of championships, which means performing every routine on all four apparatus flawlessly and as they would on any normal gym day. Off social media. Be there. Shut out pressure. Don’t overthink the meeting.
Simple idea: bat 1,000, hit 8/8, and scoring will arrive. Most find it simpler to sell in a sound bite than on the competition floor.
Biles changes the sport’s normal with each rotation and decision. A journalist questioned Landi whether Biles’ Yurchenko double pike, which she is the only woman to try in competition, should seem as effortless as it did Friday when the judges gave her an unbelievable 9.8 execution mark. “No,” he said. It’s unusual. Not normal, she.”
By others’ standards. If Biles competes in top gymnastics for the duration of this Olympic cycle, the world will rise to the occasion. At championships this weekend, practically every gymnast looked far better than three weeks earlier.
World championships all-around silver medallist Shilese Jones had been out for 10 months due to injury but appeared set to medal in Antwerp, Belgium, in October. Jones finished second behind Biles in the all-around, won bars, and earned 14s on every equipment. Since competing in the Tokyo Olympics as an alternate, University of Florida star Leanne Wong won bronze in the all-around, her best championship performance.
After inviting 18 gymnasts to a mid-September selection camp, the national team leadership will choose the five women who will represent the U.S. at worlds. National team strategic head Alicia Sacramone stated earlier this week, “This is going to be one of the tougher worlds teams to make,” adding that team dynamic and competition preparedness are as crucial as contest outcomes to her and technical lead Chellsie Memmel. “Ideally, we want veterans and up-and-comers with international experience,” Memmel added.
The men’s team unveiled their world’s team following finals Sunday for the first time since 2017, skipping a selection camp. Hong, 19, became the youngest U.S. men’s all-around champion in 34 years Saturday with his maiden national victory. U.S. all-around silver medallist Khoi Young, 20, and bronze medalist Fred Richard, 19, will join Hong in Antwerp.
The U.S. men’s programme hasn’t won a significant international medal since 2014’s world championship bronze, but championships showed promise. The squad will restore the U.S. to the world podium, according to Hong.
“Brett [McClure, men’s program VP] and Jason [Woodnick, men’s high-performance director] are really supportive of us competing the hard stuff and they’re not afraid for us to fall,” Hong said of USA Gymnastics’ post-Tokyo bonus for tougher skills. “They know there will be blunders, so we just have to perform those challenging routines. We can only compete with China, Japan, and Russia that way.”

5.Gran Turismo– Search Volume 50K+
‘Gran Turismo’ and ‘Barbie’ are tied at the box office.
NY (AP)— According to studio forecasts Sunday, “Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story” is marginally ahead of Greta Gerwig’s musical sensation.
According to Sony Pictures, “Gran Turismo” launched with $17.3 million over the weekend, while Warner Bros. said “Barbie” grossed $17.1 million in its sixth week. Final Monday ticket sales may change those totals.
Although “Gran Turismo” has the checker flag, “Barbie” sold more tickets Friday through Sunday owing to problems.
An example: Multiplexes had a usual weekend. On Sunday, most U.S. movie theaters gave $4 tickets to all films and showtimes for the second National Cinema Day.
On the discounted day, repeat viewings of “Barbie” were expected to make it the top draw. “Barbie” outsold “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($574 million) with $594.8 million in domestic ticket sales. Barbie will surpass “Mario”’s $1.35 million with $1.34 billion internationally.
During a slow season, National Cinema Day sells popcorn to entice moviegoers and make up for lost ticket sales. The busiest cinema day of the year was last year with 8.1 million moviegoers. Warner Bros. expected “Barbie” to do $7.8 million on Sunday with approximately 2 million viewers.
The top weekend movie?
Jeffrey Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive, calls Barbie. Without a doubt.”
Although “Barbie” is the weekend’s greatest draw, “Gran Turismo” has a little (and maybe disgusting) edge. Sony’s weekend “Gran Turismo” totals include $3.9 million from pre-Thursday previews and $1.4 million from Thursday previews. Hollywood’s accounting has stretched an opening “weekend.”
“We’ve made a big issue of it only because ‘Barbie’ has incredible holds,” suggests Goldstein. „Taking away the number one, which would make it five weekends at number one since opening, doesn’t seem right for the ‘Barbie’ filmmakers who deserve the praise.”
Sony executives won’t comment.
Whatever, $60 million “Gran Turismo” started poorly. The film about a young kid whose PlayStation obsession makes him a racer is popular. Theatergoers gave the Neill Blomkamp picture a “A” CinemaScore.
Studios cannot promote films with their casts due to the strike by actors and screenwriters. To promote “Gran Turismo,” Sony held weeks of preview screenings and fan events.
“Obviously, every movie is in pursuit of being the number one film,” stated Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. Barbie is a global sensation. ‘Barbie’ will win this weekend nevertheless. Without stars, Sony promoted the picture with the audience.
Blue Beetle, which led last week, slid to third with $12.8 million in its second week. DC failed again with Warner Bros.’ $46.3 million in two weeks.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” held fourth with $9 million in its sixth week. Universal Pictures’ film, like its “Barbenheimer” sibling, has screened late at most theaters. ‘Oppenheimer’ garnered $300 million domestically and $777.1 million overseas.
Additional movies opened. The limited release of MGM’s high school comedy “Bottoms” grossed $51,600 per site in 10 theaters. Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions’ Liam Neeson drama “Retribution” earned $3.3 million at 1,750 locations.
A Dennis Quaid sports drama, “The Hill,” made $2.5 million from 1,570 Briarcliff and Open Road venues. “Golda,” starring Helen Mirren as the former Israeli prime minister, debuted in 883 theaters on Bleecker Street for $2 million.
According to Comscore, North American summer box office is $70 million shy of $4 billion. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have back after poor seasons with “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “The Flash,” and “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One.” First summer box office to reach $4 billion since 2019.
Comscore predicts U.S. and Canadian Friday-Sunday theatrical ticket sales. The last domestic data are due Monday.
