UNC-Chapel Hill shooting kills faculty member
A doctoral student shot and murdered a teaching member at UNC-Chapel Hill Monday afternoon, university officials and police said, closing down the campus for hours.
Tailei Qi, an applied physical sciences graduate student, was arrested Monday afternoon. Police indicated at a news conference Monday night that formal charges are pending.
The dead faculty member was not identified by university authorities and police as they notified their relatives.
Qi’s Twitter tweets showed irritation, tension, and melancholy, but police have not determined a motive. This year and last, he posted vaguely about disagreement with other students and his “PI” or primary investigator, a university staff member assigned to collaborate with students on research projects.
Not sure whether that PI is the slain faculty member.
Qi tweeted, “Just feel my privacy was insulted,” on July 18, 2022. I will devalue my work by thinking I’m showing the employer I’m working instead of my hobbies. How horrible. Respect keeps me from working. I have to work hard to persuade myself I do what I like.”
Last August 1, he posted:
American bullying seems to be an issue. People frequently don’t stop them at first. Not a solution, explanation makes them believe others will plead with them every time they raise an issue, causing them voyeur to find an excuse day and night.
Another ambiguous post alleging a student-PI confrontation occurred on Aug. 18, 2022:
“Talk to my PI and get his promise. He should have more experience with females and tattletales. Then we can stop discussing silly things. Just pay attention to nature. Nothing will change until necessary.”
His October 31, 2022 article on issues with his PI and other students was ambiguous again: “Both the group of people to say I am lazy and that to prove me working hard instead of telling me that they are trying to consume my privacy.” ‘I judge their purpose is merely to inform my PI then control me by taletelling.
He commented, “But it’s weird when I talked about it with my PI.” He stated no one told him that. This is just voyeurism for them?
Qi tweeted again on May 30 about his work environment: “These kind of people may be a good man actually, but might not be a sincere friend.” “For a Phd student, focusing on daily work hours is childish…Many want me to demonstrate their job, but that’s not human.
A series of unclear messages insulting women were made in June.
“Many counter-intuitive (sic) situation in society: minimum wage do more harm to instead protect the poor; gender quota is not to protect women but to enhance discrimination,” he wrote on June 5.
He commented on June 12 evening, “When this kind of girl shows her ‘best’ to beg others to ‘help’ me, all people then look down on me.” A “kind of angelic bitch.”
It was contextless since many tweets preceding it were removed.
On July 31, he wrote about making buddies.
He commented, “Would like to make some new friends.” I’m a second-year PhD student interested in nanoparticle production, optical trapping, self-assembly, spectra analysis, and ML. Very eager in research, yet ignorant in everyday life. If interested, contact me.
He posed a cryptic question that day: “What is truth?”
Classroom barricaded students for hours
The university issued an Alert Carolina alert just after 1 p.m. Monday following reports of shots fired at Caudill Labs, which contains chemical labs. The UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees held a special meeting and canceled all courses.
Students, students, and staff hid in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and dormitories, shutting off lights and barricading doors as police searched for the gunman.
A person of interest picture of Qi was issued by the university police at 2:35 p.m. UNC-Chapel Hill police released a man not involved in the shooting on Monday. According to UNC Police, Qi was arrested at 2:31 p.m. on Williams Circle approximately a mile from campus.
At the news conference, Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz remarked, “This is really a time for the community to come together.” Sadly, these tragedies are occurring nationwide. This is why we prepare and discuss community. Now, my thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family, friends, coworkers, and department students.”
The incident locked down UNC Hospitals early in the afternoon, but a spokeswoman said no one was injured. Police announced a “all clear” after the hospital lockdown ended at 4 p.m.
On campus following the lockdown, police and FBI agents searched Caudill Labs, where a window had a gunshot hole.
James remarked during the news conference, “It’s a day we train for.” “We hope it never comes.”
Second week of autumn semester on campus began Monday. Classes are canceled Tuesday.
“I’m sorry so many of you are feeling uncertain about your safety right now,” Guskiewicz told pupils Monday. We have excellent procedures. No one is more essential on campus than the safety of our almost 30,000 students, instructors, and staff.”
“We’re here for you,” Guskiewicz says. “I beg you to use any resources you need. We will work together to protect you and others on Chapel Hill’s campus.”
The UNC-Chapel Hill incident occurred days after a Greensboro shooting at N.C. A&T University.
Friday night’s campus gunfire wounded one person after a disagreement erupted outside the student center. Police reported 10 shots. Campus authorities and police say students weren’t engaged in the on-campus incident, but Chancellor Harold Martin said the institution is increasing police patrols and adopting a new procedure to remove unwelcome students.

First US Open match since 2021 final: Novak Djokovic dominates.
NY — At the US Open, Novak Djokovic will return to No. 1.
Djokovic defeated Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 on Monday night to return to the competition after missing last year.
Before the 23-time Grand Slam winner could commence the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Coco Gauff won three sets. The event also marked 50 years of equal prize money at the US commence.
Djokovic remarked, “Well, I knew it was going to be a late night for me, late start of the match.” It was exciting to play on the court. I wasn’t worried if I began after midnight since I’d been waiting years to play the night session at our sport’s greatest and loudest venue.”
Due to his COVID-19 immunization, Djokovic was denied entry to the US last year. Monday’s match was his first at Flushing Meadows since losing to Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 final, which stopped him from completing the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men’s tennis since 1969.
The spectators cheered Djokovic as he came from the tunnel onto Arthur Ashe Stadium court, showing their appreciation.
He seemed to miss them as he accepted the shouts of a record audience of over 30,000, including former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.
“I was excited to go out on the court; it has been a couple of years, so to come in front of you guys is always a pleasure,” Djokovic told thousands in New York. Everyone who came out and remained until nearly 1 a.m. is appreciated.
The Arthur Ashe night sessions are always exceptional.”
The No. 2 seed claimed the opening set in 23 minutes and the first eight games before Muller could score, lifting his arms in victory after trimming it to 2-1 in the second set.
“The first two sets of the concert describe how I felt tonight. The opening set was virtually perfect, lights-out tennis “Djokovic. “I’ve probably answered every shot in his book.”
Djokovic was 17-0 in US Open first-round matches and predicted a return to No. 1 on Sept. 11. Djokovic needed just reach the second round to reclaim the top place from Carlos Alcaraz since he couldn’t compete last year and had no rankings points to defend. The ranking will be Djokovic’s 390th week, extending his record.
Alcaraz will defend his championship against Germany’s Dominik Koepfer on Tuesday after defeating Djokovic in an exciting Wimbledon final in July.
Next for Djokovic is Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who defeated American Ethan Quinn in straight sets.

3.Zach Bryan– Search Volume 100K+
Zach Bryan announces 10-month 2024 tour; Jason Isbell, Sheryl Crow open stadium shows
Zach Bryan hopes to tour longer and in some instances larger U.S. venues in 2024 after a brief tour. The singer-songwriter launched the “Quittin Time Tour” on Monday, which will take him on the road from March through December, mostly in arenas but sometimes in stadiums.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Sheryl Crow, two veteran headliners, will open stadium performances for the 27-year-old sensation. Turnpike Troubadours, Sierra Ferrell (who appears on Bryan’s new album), the Middle East, Matt Maeson, and Levi Turner (Bryan’s label artist and tour opener) are other openers.
The revelation follows Warner Records’ release of “Zach Bryan” this Friday and the conclusion of the “Burn, Burn, Burn Tour” this weekend.
The tour is sponsored by AEG Presents. Most gigs will utilize Ticketmaster, unlike Bryan’s 2023 tour, which exclusively played places without Ticketmaster. From the 54 Bryan gigs scheduled for next year, 42 will be on sale via Ticketmaster presale connections.
AEG Presents handles registration and code distribution for all performances, including those ticketed through Ticketmaster.
Despite its 10-month duration, the tour is missing a few large areas, including southern California, where Bryan recently performed a sold-out event at Crypto.com Arena five nights ago. This suggests that not all tour dates have been filled yet.
Bryan is doing two-night stays in most venues instead of stadiums, including the tour-opening March 6-7 in Chicago and the finale Dec. 13-14 in his hometown of Tulsa.
The stadium gigs include Dallas, Boston, Denver, Atlanta, Tampa, and Minneapolis. The tour will include Isbell in Tampa, Arlington, TX, and Foxborough, MA. Crow performs in Atlanta.
Bryan is anticipated to limit ticket resales, as he did with his last tour. Fans must pre-register here for a presale code before buying tickets. For those with the code, the presale starts Sept. 6. General on-sale is Sept. 8.

4.Elton John – Search Volume 50K+
Elton John stays in hospital overnight following house fall.
Elton John had hip surgery in 2021 after falling. The “Rocket Man” singer rushed to the hospital after his latest slide as a “precautionary measure.”
Elton John, 76, was hospitalized and discharged after collapsing at his Nice residence over the weekend.
Following a slip yesterday at his residence in the south of France, Elton attended the local hospital as a precaution, John’s spokesman told TODAY.com. “After checkups, he was immediately discharged this morning and is now back at home and healthy.”
After tabloids claimed John utilizing a wheelchair in 2022, fans worried about his health. He posted more about his health on Instagram.
“The truth is that I’m healthy, love my shows, and play and sing well. After everyone has waited so long to see concerts again, I give 100% every night and never want to disappoint. Your reaction to every concert has been amazing, and I’m enjoying it, he wrote.
He stated that he was wheelchair-bound after a performance to alleviate stress.
“After another rousing 2.5 hour show, we arrived at Leipzig airport, just before curfew, to find part of the airport had closed,” him. My staff graciously lay out a wheelchair so I could rest my hip after the concert since it was a lengthy walk to the airport. That’s all.”
John tweeted in September 2021 that he needed hip surgery after “falling awkwardly on a hard surface.” Some of his final tour dates were postponed to recuperate.
“I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications,” tweeted X. “I will undergo intensive physiotherapy to ensure a full recovery and full mobility without pain.”
John’s health delayed his final tour more than hip surgery. John postponed two shows in January 2022 because to COVID-19. The “Benny and the Jets” performer had “mild symptoms” after being vaccinated and boosted, the Associated Press said.
The “Candle in the Wind” singer ended his 50-year journey with his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour this month.
John remarked in a press release: “When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn’t have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and highs and lows this tour — and the world — would experience in the next five years.”

Noah Lyles annoys NBA players with post-championship remarks
Noah Lyles won the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 4×100-meter events at the global championships in Budapest, Hungary, last week, becoming the first man since Usain Bolt to do so.
He had one complaint: NBA players calling themselves “world champion” after winning the Finals.
“Watching the NBA Finals with ‘world champion’ on their heads pains me most. World champion of what? United States?” Lyles answered a 200-meter win question with “short.”
Get me right. I sometimes adore the U.S., but not the globe. The world is not that. The world is us. We have practically every nation battling, flourishing, and flying their flag to demonstrate their representation. No flags in the NBA “added.
NBA superstars quickly heard his fiery opinion.
Kevin Durant, who has three Olympic gold medals and one world championship gold, and Devin Booker, who has one gold from the 2020 Tokyo Games, expressed their unhappiness on social media.
